Central Server Installation and Configuration

In the workshared environment, where team members collaborate on the same Revit project, the central server is necessary for managing access to the project.

Revit Server can be installed as a central server and a local server. These are installed separately from the same installation page. In each installation, when defining Server Type and Cache folders, you must exit by selecting Click to close and return to product list, before you install.

If you select Install without configuring, a central server is created with the default path locations.

Note You must allow ICMP requests through the firewall for the local and central Revit servers.

To install a central server

  1. On the Revit installation page, select Install Tools & Utilities and accept the license agreement.
  2. On the Configure Installation page, note that there are checkboxes next to components that are selected. If you do not wish to install these components, click the related checkboxes so they are no longer selected.
  3. Select the Revit Server checkbox (by default, it is not selected).
  4. Move the cursor over Install Revit Server to enable server-based worksharing over the WAN, and select Click to open and configure.
  5. Under Server Type, set the paths for the Project and Cache folders. If you change the drive, it must have the appropriate access rights so that Revit Server can successfully write to it. For best results, set access rights to give full control to the SYSTEM, Administrators, and CREATOR OWNER users for Revit Server's cache and project folders (as well as subfolders and files).
  6. Select Click to close and return to product list to close the page. This step must be completed before installing.
  7. Select Install.
